Short Breviary 1975 Banned Confiscated By Us Bishops

A short breviaryperhaps the crowning gloryof the benedictine monks of saint john's abbey'sliturgical presspublishedthough not always continuouslyfrom 1941 up until the presentextraordinarily rarein every edition(except the currently published one)but especially valuedand virtually impossible to findin this editionwith the patristic readings from vatican ii's liturgy of the hoursthe fourth (banned by the bishops of the usa! ) edition this fourth editionmarked another complete break in the history of a short breviary, being, as its title page noted (every phrase is important but did not prevent the liturgical press being severely disciplined)book of prayer for personal useashort breviaryabridged and simplifiedby monks of saint john's abbeyfrom theliturgia horarumwholly revised fourth edition, 1975 the liturgical press's new designed leatherette binding, embossed with gold titles and logo, five orignial ribbons in pristine condition, sewn into the binding, 4.5 x 7 1823 pagescollegeville's famed breviary paper stock, thin, yet incredibly sturdy and taking print well, without bleeding permitted such a large and complete book to still be manageable size and weight wiseexcept for the previous owner's name label inside the front coverand the usual external wear to the cover (as per the scans) near mint conditionbinding tight text cleanodor-freenote this breviary contains the vaticn ii cursus of the liturgical hoursoffice of readings, morning praise lauds, daytime prayer or terce, sext, none, vespers and bedtime prayer complinesaint john's abbey presswas the liturgical press left off the book, anticipating possible trouble? Collegeville, minnesota1975imprimatur + october 8, 1974 here's the little-known and not-very-pretty storyof how the united states' bishops descended with furyupon the poor benedictine monks whose liturgical presshad been almost single-handedly responsible for the liturgical movement in the usa! So why was this fourth editionbanned by the us bishops committee on the liturgyand lal extra copies of the book recalled from circulation?
Call the liturgical press even today and you'll not be able to get a copy not even an extra for study purposes! In fact, in the new edition of a short breviary, whose primary title is benedictine daily prayer, and which contains all kinds of disclaimers that it is not meant to replace the official liturgy of the hours or fulfill anyone's canonical obligation, you find this footnoteon the untimely 1976 demise of the 1975 book of prayer see mark j. Twomey, seventy-five years of grace the liturgical press 1926-2001 collegeville the liturgical press, 2001, 15-16. The liturgical press still receives occasional requests for this now unavailable edition. Just before the official four-volume liturgy of the hours was published(and, of course, made mandatory for the clergy), this new short breviary came out- incorporating all the changes from the liturgia horarum (4 week psalter, new calendar, etc), and here was the killer (which led to the banning! ) -through a judicious abridgement, providingfor each day of the weekandall the feast daysa scriptural readinganda patristic reading! And the hymns were not the generic mass hymns imported from various currnet hymnalsbut translations prepared by the scholarly latinist-monks of the abbey! And the whole thing sold for about $20, rather than the close to $100 four-volume officialliturgy of the hours! So which would yuo have chosen?
Exactly! The prohibitions and injunctions followed swiftly anad book of prayer (a short breviary 1975) was history!

Forevermore unavailable except here on ebay! We've provided extensive scans of the coming/current week in ordinary time (week 33)and a sampling of the psalter, christmas from the proper of seasonsand immaculate conception from the sanctoral propers so you can see for yourselfwhy this breviary was such a dangerous competitor to the official edition.

Oh yes, it uses the old psalms the confraternity not the grail psalms- so you can't use it with others hwo are using the official publication. But then, as the title made clear, it wasn't published for that purpose. It is getting more and more difficult to find a short breviary no ebaybut rarely in this editionor in this exceptionally fine condition!
oD not be disappointed! Bid early and highfor a breviary that is all but impossible to findin this banned editionand which you may never see again in any condition, let alone this near mint condition.
