This papyrus is written on both sides, the story of ipuwer is written on the front while a song to one of the gods is written on the back. The text is hieratic, the writing of the scribes that was developed from the hieroglyphic text. It is made up of 17 pages many pages being damaged to some extent but the predominant part of the text is translatable. It tells of a horrific natinoal disaster in which chaos rules the land. There was violence and death and many unusual phenomena.
It is thought to be the writings of a sage who directs his complaints against a ruler who has neglected to take action and secure his people. Both the ipuwer papyrus and the biblical book of exodus describe a frantic search for water, the loss of fish and plagues of cattle, destructino of crops and vegetation, fire from the sky, darkness, the escape of slaves and death is everywhere. There are too many similarities among the two texts to discount them as coincidental, leading renown historian immanuel velikovsky to write his interpretation of the events amongst the greater history of israel and egypt.
